Ground lesson FAQs
-
Your enthusiasm is great to see, but no, a wetsuit is not necessary for any of our introductory or kite mastery kiteboarding ground lessons.
-
Spending the bulk of your kiteboarding lessons on land might sound like preparing for a swim without getting wet, but it's the secret sauce to becoming a pro kiter in the shortest possible time. Think of it like wakeboarding - most people are up and cruising in no time, and confident in an hour, except here, the kite replaces the boat, and the only 'fuel' you're burning is your own excitement. This land-based focus sharpens your kite skills so that when you hit the water, you're not just ready; you're raring to rip the waves with style and safety.
-
Our lessons are designed to be an hour long, providing focused and effective training. However, many of our students opt for two-hour sessions, finding that the extended time significantly accelerates their progression and skill development.
-
Mastering the full-sized kite requires dedication and a personalized learning approach. The initial hour of our lessons is dedicated to understanding the wind, weather, and water hazards specific to kiting in Victoria. This includes discussions on theory, safety, equipment setup, and a mock self-rescue drill.
Beyond this, students typically need 1-3 hours of introductory lessons with the 1.4m² kite. For kite mastery lessons using the depowered full-sized kite, it usually takes 4-6 hours to develop comfort and readiness for the water lesson. The total time can vary depending on your learning pace and aptitude.

Kiteboarding, while an extreme sport, primarily sees accidents stemming from insufficient knowledge and skills. Recognizing this, DKP places a strong emphasis on teaching not just techniques, but also comprehensive safety practices. Our experienced instructors approach kiteboarding with a mindset that, with the right training and awareness, the risks can be minimized to the level of everyday activities. They often compare the sport's safety to that of a routine walk, provided one is well-prepared and informed. We ensure all students

While the thrill of 'flying' is a kiteboarder's dream, actual prolonged flight, as you might be imagining, isn't possible with kiteboarding kites. These kites, typically ranging from 7 to 14 m², are designed to provide sufficient pull for dynamic movement and jumps, but they won't lift you off into sustained flight. They do require careful handling, as they can lift you off your feet if not managed correctly.
For true flying, sports like paragliding use much larger wings, often around 27 m². With kiteboarding, you can enjoy the thrill without the worry of being carried away.
